Here’s the deal, I’m smarter than you. I know that might sound like an insult, but take my word for it when I say that it’s not. I’m sure you’re a very intelligent person (after all, you’re reading this), it just so happens I’m a lot smarter.
With that settled, I’m going to tell you how I intend to vote in the election tomorrow, and I urge you to take my lead and vote the same way.
President of the United States - Barack Obama
There’s not much to say here. There was a time, a long time ago, when I was a big fan of John McCain, and I seriously considered him to be a viable Republican choice for someone with Liberal tendencies. His choice of Sarah Palin was such a monumental failure (both in judgment & for his campaign) that nothing I can say can better illustrate how unqualified he is for the position of President.
I’m a Liberal, and proud of it, but I’ve never been entirely sold on the Obama ‘Hope’ train. But I do know that when Bush was first elected I thought to myself ‘How much damage can he possibly do in 4 or 8 years?’ Now, having seen what a weak leader can do to even the greatest of nations in such a short period of time, I have to vote Obama, if only to keep Palin as far from the White House as I possibly can.
Prop 1 – High-Speed Passenger Train – YES
Yes, it’s going to cost a lot. Yes it will not be immediately profitable. Yes, it’s worth it. More effort needs to be made in California (and the entire country) to invest in better forms of transportation, and this is exactly that.
Prop 2 - Standards for Confining Farm Animal - YES
The conditions these animals are kept in are intolorable. I hope the fear-mongering scumbags who try and push this Mexican Salmonella risk crap end up having their eyes pecked out by a free-roaming flock of chickens.
Prop 3 - Children’s Hospital Bond - NO
I’m all for Children and hospitals, and I think we need to do a whole lot more for care a facilities. I’m just not sold that this is the best way to do it. A similar bond was passed back in 2004, about 70% of which has been spent. My math on that tells me there’s still time to look for a better option before passing another.
Prop 4 - Sarah’s Law - NO
Forcing abused teens, who may very well have been impregnated by an adult in their family, inform that very family is retarded.
Fuck you conservative republican assholes. If you didn’t withhold important sex education from you children, and hold the threat of shame and ostracism over them should they get pregnant, you wouldn’t have to worry about them getting an abortion without telling you about it.
Prop 5 - Nonviolent Offender Rehabilitation Act - YES
California’s prison system is overflowing. Where do you propose we keep all these ‘criminals’? Take minor, non-violent offenses and make them into tickets and fines. Don’t send non-violent criminals with the potential to be rehabilitated to violent prisons. Oh Noes!
Prop 6 - Safe neighborhoods Act - NO
This is like the reverse of Prop 5. Gangs and Drugs are symptoms of a much bigger problem that is not being addressed. If this bond were just for additional police on the streets, I would fully support it regardless of cost, but funneling money into failed law enforcement programs that aren’t working is stupid (Yes, I’m pointing at you D.A.R.E.)
Prop 7 - Solar and Clean Energy Act - NO
10% premium charged on renewable energies? That’s real incentive for consumer’s to want this. 20 year contract? Yeah, that’s a great way to stay flexible and ahead of the curve. Look, we need renewable energy more than ever, but isn’t the whole point to be better by being progressive? You can’t write laws and contracts on these things like you would big oil or electricity. Why are we trying to legislate the removal of one corrupt monopoly with another?
Prop 8 - California Marriage Protection Act (AKA The “I’m a homophobe if I vote for this” act) - NO
Not everyone lives in a make believe world where some benevolent sky-daddy watches over us and passes moral judgement. In the real world discrimination is wrong, period. There is no wiggle room in this argument.
Prop 9 - Marsy’s Law - NO
In theory, this is a really good idea. Unfortunately, some of the provisions go too far towards assuming guilt before innocence and, in some cases, makes it far more difficult for someone accused of a crime to properly defend themselves against those charges.
Prop 10 - The California Renewable Energy and Clean Alternative Fuel Act - NO
Where Prop 7 was well intentioned, but just flawed mechanically, Prop 10 is just garbage. It’s basically a bait and switch con attempt by Texas tycoon T. Boone Pickens. Getting $2,000 back on a Prius sounds nice (the Prius is the only hybrid that would qualify for that subsidy), but that isn’t where the bulk of the money goes. How about $10,000 for a plug-in hybrid? Sounds great, but there’s no market for it yet, and it expires in 5 years, conveniently just before you could actually use it to buy a nifty new Volt. In reality, nearly all of money the state would pay out under Prop 10 would end up in Pickens’ pocket.
So while Prop 10 may sound like it’s all that and a bag of chips, in reality it’s a Texas businessman drinking our Milkshake with a really long straw.
Prop 11 - Voters FIRST Act - YES
Even though this potentially hurts the Democratic Party here in California, and I hate Republicans more than I can possibly explain, gerrymandering is bullshit and can’t be tolerated. I’m not sure this is the right solution, but we have to try something.
Prop 12 - Housing Vets - YES
Veterans deserve this and much more. It doesn’t matter whether you agree with the war they fought, the troops deserve to be be given every benefit possible for the risks they took for our country.
Measure J - Money for Community Colleges - YES
Education is the single biggest problem facing the U.S. today.
Measure Q - Money for L.A.U.S.D. - YES
I hate having to pass bonds in order to get our schools the funds they need, but if the politicians in Sacramento are too busy with their thumbs up their asses to make it right, we have no other choice.
Measure R - Money for Rapid Transit - YES
Our transportation system is a joke.
Measure U - LA County Utility User’s Tax - YES
Measure A - Gang & Youth Violence Prevention - YES
See, this is how you try and combat gangs and drugs - by providing safe alternatives such as after-school arts and athletic programs.
Measure B - Update of Low Rent Housing Authorization - YES
This is a perfect example of why I hate legislating via ballot measures. Now, to tweak previous measures already passed, we need another one. This should be handled by legislators, and should never have been an issue.
(Note that I am a California resident, so most of this information is region specific. I understand that there are many similar sounding issues on ballots across the country, but do not make the mistake of assuming they are the same. Many well intentioned laws can be so poorly written as to be harmful to their own cause.)
